Topic: Which Volume Pedal has the smoothest "swell"? |

Which volume pedal has the "smoothest" swell from low volume to max volume, without a drastic "jump" in volume? You know, where the slightest foot pedal movement makes the volume jump real quick. Trying to control these "jumpy" types of pedals keeps my volume foot overly tensed up. Looking for a smoother volume so I can relax my foot a little. Will changing the pot help this?

| If there's a sudden jump in the volume on a pot pedal, there's a good chance that someone installed the wrong pot in the pedal. If it's a powered pedal, it may have an electrical issue. |

| I use an old Ernie Ball with jacks on the side and a Dunlop Pot... Smooth as silk and great sounding across the entire sweep. |

Kristen if the “jump†is persistent try a 500 K pot in your volume pedal. I had the same troubles years ago after buying a second hand volume pedal with the wrong pot installed like the gentleman above spoke about. After discussing the issue with Bobbe Seymour I sent the pedal to him and that’s what he installed and I never had another issue. Although Bobbe isn’t with us anymore Steel Guitars of Nashville is still operating. Talk to Bob Hempker or Buck Reid and explain your issue with them.

Thanks. I will look at the pot.
The volume pedal(s) I use I just put in a related post in this Electronics section. Here it is again:
[[[[I have a Dunlop GCB-80 High Gain that I used with my (six string electric) guitar. I also got a AMT mini pedal They work but I am not happy.
I would use the little AMT years ago because it was convenient to pack and carry with a lap steel. Or put on a pedal board. I don't think the volume sweep is smooth at all.
I currently use the Dunlop pedal with a Freeloader to keep my tone. But I am not sure my ankle likes it much. I don't think the volume swell is so smooth. I haven't tried a low profile pedal so I can't compare.
I am 5'7" and wear a low (1 to 1/2 inch) heel. In fact I have one certain pair of shoes I always wear when I play.]]]]

| The Dunlop GCB 80 is equipped with a 250k potentiometer. You really need a 500k for pedal steel. For me the pivot point is wrong for sitting at the steel. Ernie Ball is better and with a 500k pot it's very good. For me Goodrich is the best pot pedal and I have several. Plus most of my favorite players used them at the time I was learning pedal steel. |
