PSG beginner alert!
Hey guys I'm fairly new to the PSG (but not to music as its been part of most of my life). I have a 1974 Sho-Bud Pro I, and I wonder if someone could help me on balancing the sound from the pickup. It seems that strings 1,2,3 are quite a bit lower in volume than the rest. Is there anything I need to know about adjusting the pickup? Do you put spacers under the lower volume side to increase the volume on that side? I don't see any visible adjustment screws other than the mounting screws. I love my steel and I don't want to do anything to hurt it! Any advice or direction would be much appreciated!

No spacers, Check the fingers aren't grooved out too much from the strings, thats where the problem is the most, the string isen't ringing properly. George L pick ups are fantastic by the way, i've never seen one go short. On those pick-ups use 2 quarters stacked for string clearance equally across. Put new strings on it if they are not already. Lovely guitar BTW. _________________ A.K.A Chappy. |

Thats a gorgeous Bud,,
Before I did anything with a GeorgeL, I would get a single coil in it, preferably an original or rewound ShoBud pickup.. Thats what that guitar deserves... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

The 3 mounting screws will adjust the height.. there’s springs under them. The 2 on the treble side adjusts the height and angle, and the one on the bass side adjusts the height on that end. |

Thanks for the replies guys. I noticed some "gunk" under the string and I wiped it off but I'm still not sure if that helped much, but maybe I'm just being a little paranoid. I guess it just seems to me its still not loud enough on strings 1,2,3. I'm going to check with 2 quarters, but it looks to me like the strings are actually closer than 2 quarters but I'll double check. As far as the gunk goes, I hope a previous owner didn't use grease on the changer. The flash on my camera made the changer look worse looking that it actually is. Pic of changer attached (string is loosened and I pushed it over to clean). Thanks guys for the reply.

PSG's are like vehicles in that they need to be serviced regularly. This simply includes new strings, using a light oil to lube moving parts each time. The SIT Sho-Bud gauges seem to work well on this particular guitar. Gauges are, .013,.015,.011,.014,.017,.026W,.030W,.034W,.036W. I use these but replace the .011's with .012's. For light oil I like 3-in-1,PTFE Lubricant. Especially keep the nut rollers oiled and moving. Good luck !!! |

I’d use simichrome polish on those fingers, ( theyre looking nasty) polish them up like new, plan on 5 min of rubbing per finger and using a few rags. Put new strings on her I think you’ll be all set. _________________ A.K.A Chappy. |
