I don't know anything about amps and after I built a Lap Steel guitar I purchased a used Fender Dec-30 amp. After taking it home I didn't get a chance to try it until a week or so later. This amp has 100 presets and when I tried the amp I found that 3 or 4 of the presets seemed to be ok, but the vast majority of them had a very loud buzz when selected. This happens even when nothing is plugged into the amp. I borrowed a small CUBE amp and the Lap Steel works fine on it so I know it is not the guitar and as I said, the buzz exists even when nothing is plugged into it. I made sure that the gain was turned down but the buzz continues. I'm looking for some guidance as I have no idea as to where to begin looking for the problem. It makes me think that maybe something needs to be grounded?

Hi John,
It's a G-Dec 30 amp you have. I did a search and found the procedure for a reset of the system. Give that a try.

To perform a Factory reset, press and hold the Save, Drums & Exit buttons on your amp while powering it on. Allow it to power on fully. Once the amp is powered up fully, it should be restored back to Factory stock. Then you can test for functionality. Please let us know if we can assist further.

Before I reset the amp to factory default I decided to try it again. When I said that the buzz was there even when nothing was plugged in, I had unplugged the cable from the guitar but the cable was still plugged into the amp. If I unplug the cable from the amp the buzz is gone. I figured then that it must be a faulty cable so I bought a new cable but the buzz is still there even with the new cable. Maybe its something to do with the input jack. There is a jack in the front marked "Input" and a jack in the back marked "Guitar". I tried them both but get the same result.

Most amps will buzz if you do not have the cable plugged into an instrument as it creates an open circuit.

Thanks David but the buzz is present when the cable is plugged into the guitar and when it is not plugged into the guitar.

Have you tried plugging the amp into a different outlet? Have you tried a different guitar cable? Have you tried a different guitar?

Beyond that, I wouldn't waste too much time trying to figure out the problem. If the hum doesn’t go away when you do the reset it, it’s probably not fixable in an amp like that. Most of the parts can’t be easily replaced and a tech would charge you more than the amp is worth, assuming they’d agree to work on it in the first place.

Hi Gabriel, I have tried another guitar in the amp, as mentioned above, I bought a new cable and tried that, but I did not try a different outlet. I tried a small CUBE amp that I borrowed in the same outlet and no problems.

This is probably stupid but if this modelling amp you may have turned on one of the distorted models by mistake.

I don't think so Charlie. It happens with almost every preset. I restored the presets to factory default but the buzz continues. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Well, I guess the G-Dec30 is now a big paper weight. I bought a Line 6 Spider IV 75. There is no buzz on this one. Smile
