If you let Fedex or Ups do the packing have them do a double box one for the case an steel an one larger box too hold air bags an styrofoam peanuts.

I want to brag about Dan Kelley from Massachusetts. I bought a Speedy West guitar from Dan recently and when I received it FedEx I was amazed at the method Dan uses for shipping guitars!

This is the carton as it arrives. Notice the cutout in the top for the guitar case handle-drivers love it for carrying to the door!

If you removed the cardboard you would see this. The guitar case surrounded by 1” foam. Notice again the case handle is also below the level of the foam, protecting it during shipping.

Notice in this picture the case itself is wrapped in duct tape to keep it secure. But notice that Dan first wraps the case with blue painters tape to protect the case from the duct tape!

Dan also wrapped the contents of the case in cloth towels and bubble wrap to keep everything secure!

A final note about Dan’s work. If you are careful when opening the carton you can cut the foam top off with the cardboard attached and then lift the guitar case out of the foam board lined carton.

A really great reusable shipping container! Well done to member Dan Kelley from Massachusetts!👍

Yes Rick I think that’s a very good packing job also it adds very little weight to the hole package. My shipping crate adds a lot of extra weight an cost too the package. I may copy this in the future.

The shipping cases Johnie King builds are second to none, 5 star all the way. I just wish builders would take some lessons from him. Just my opinion, when you spend so much money on a new or recently loved guitar, it should at least merit a safe secure package to travel in. My hat is off to Mr. King, again just my opinion.

Rick, thanks for posting those pictures.

That's how I will pack my guitar in case I ever need to take in on a flight since I don't have a "flight case." The only problem I can think of is that if the border security agents will want to inspect my guitar they might not put the packaging back together properly, leaving the guitar susceptible to damage.

Maybe writing "DO NOT OPEN: This is not a bomb, it is a musical instrument called Pedal Steel Guitar" on the carton with a black marker will cause them to leave it alone Very Happy

I just sold an empty GFI D-10 case. It was put in a cardboard box for shipping. It was a carpet covered case so I did't put any tape on the case. It was shipped UPS from Florida to Amarillo TX. ETA is Thursday so I'll see how it made the trip.

The week before I sold an empty 49 key keyboard case. I did the same with it and it made the trip from Florida to Arizona via UPS OK.

Two months ago I bid for an Emmons S-10 Push Pull and won it on Ebay Australia.

It was shipped to me by the owner from Victoria (east coast Aust.)to Western Australia covered only in one layer of bubble wrap via Australia Post. That's right across the continent.

When it was delivered to my door the only tear was on one of the corners. That was it!! I was stunned but mostly relieved.

A good shipping box you can get with a minimum of effort is the boxes that Taylor and Martin ship their dreadnaughts in, thick, solid cardboard, glued and stapled on the bottom. Breedlove boxes are pretty good, not quite as good. Also Dave Smith synthesizer boxes.

It should allow for at least a 1/2" of closed cell foam to be laid over all 6 faces, but you'll have to lop a few inches off the top or take up a lot of room inside.

It a good idea to make friends with someone at a local music store as they always have a good supply of guitar shipping boxes that can be cut down to accommodate a steel guitar case.

I always just make my own shipping boxes from whatever large pieces of cardboard I happen to have laying around. With a 4' straightedge, I can crease the cardboard right where I need it, in a nice straight line, and make a perfect rectangular box that is exactly the size I need, and no bigger.

Music stores are hip to the need for boxes and have started charging ridiculous prices due to the ebay, reverb.com and other traffic and sales.

A better alternative is auto dealer body shops. Body panels, windshields etc. are sometimes shipped in HD shipping cartons that can be modified to fit a steel guitar case and they're happy to get rid of them if you get to them before they cardboard bale them.

Auto glass companies like Safelite maybe too.

The other problem finding cartons is that almost every box store, supermarket etc. breaks down and bundles cardboard in bales and keep their recycling containers locked up. This just from my experience looking for cartons in this metropolis.
