I use naphtha for anything on the guitar, lacquer thinner for anything that's off the guitar and away from a vulnerable finish. There are several good oils to use including automatic transmission fluid, but my choice has always been Hoppe's Gun Oil available at all gun dealers. It's clear and just the right viscosity.
