Just read that Gene Watson was finally asked to join the Grand Ole Opry, Vince Gill did the honors, I know Tiny Olsen played with him for years and would love to hear from him about this.

Congrats to Gene!

My first thought when I read that he was inducted was, "It's about time."

If they had waited any longer, the honor would have been posthumous - (he's 76 now!)

Talk about OVERDUE!!!... I don’t keep track of this stuff, but dumbfounded that he hasn’t been a member for many decades by now.

I read somewhere many years ago that Gene hadn't been asked to join the Opry because he didn't march in lockstep with the Opry management. He was pretty much his own boss, deciding himself what he would record, where he would play, what he would play, etc.

I understood that Conway Twitty was much the same way.Maybe someone else can shed more light on the subject.

Doesn't that ring true for Willie Nelson also? Very Happy

That Gene only just now was asked to join is a crying shame!

Are these guys members (I think they should be):
• Mark Chesnutt
• Daryle Singletary (posthumously, sadly)
• Dale Watson
• Asleep at the Wheel

They're probably all too independent to get the invite! Willie Nelson is for sure. Dale and AATW are probably too Texas-oriented to suit Nashville.

At one time if you were a member, you had to guarantee you would work so many weekends per year. That made it hard on the hot acts as the weekends are the money makers on the road. That’s why for years you’d see the older acts on there all the time as they weren’t as popular anymore.

I doubt that is the same anymore. Can you imagine a current act like Luke Bryan giving up a $250,000.00 show for $750.00 at the Opry!

Plus, if the star/act doesn’t live in Nashville, it makes it hard to work the Opry more often
