I never imagined I would do this. Got a lead on recording pedal steel for a Hip-Hop project. I have no experience with this genre, and harbored big doubts. But having an open mind I figured, "why not?"

It was great fun! Good people, warm vibe, pro studio. Did a bunch of fills, chimes, chords with wide grips.

The young artist doing this was expecting a lap steel. His surprise turned into mutual delight. A nice change from hanging out in the woodshed.

considering you could two-step to most hip hop beats, I have long time wondered if "country hip hop" would ever take off. If it ever did, then I'd be there

I'm not averse to it, although I expressly dislike the sort of early gangster rap and misogynist tripe that was once the rage

Have you ever heard The Gourds take on Snoop Doggs "Gin and Juice"? I think that's brilliant

The "gangsta" vibe is a non starter for me too. I sent this fellow a cover I did of a Roger Miller song (from his Broadway show). He loved it, so we moved ahead.

I don't know The Gourds, but the feeling made me think of The Band. No angry gangsta down that road.

Well, Cowboy Troy scratched “hick”-hop genre a while back. A lot of collaborations these days between country and hip-hop artists.about time steel got into the act.

Probably more fun than doing a session on "Way to Survive" I would imagine.

I haven't always been open minded to music but now I may listen to anything from Liberace to Bob Wills and to be honest I like it that way. I think its super awesome you were willing to give it a try and it sounds like you had a good experience with it.

Not saying I like it, but this one was #1 on the country charts for several weeks last year. One lick looped over and over, but it is pedal steel.

I did some PSG on Rehab’s “Welcome Home” in 2009. As I remember, a great fun session. I was amazed at the amount of money they were talking about in the promotion budget.

Pedal steel can fit into any kind of music, but not any PLAYER can. Expanding the territory will keep it alive.

For sure expanding the territory is a plus for the instrument. And couldn't hurt my own creativity, such as it is.

There will probably be further opportunity to work on this project, but expect it will move along slowly.

Not pedal steel , there is some dobro on some of their songs , but this group called GangstaGrass is pretty neat Far as having a couple rappers behind a bluegrass group going at it
