I have been experimenting with this and thought I’d put some info out for others attempting to do the same. A band that I play with would like to transition to in ear monitors but as of now only the drummer and myself are using them. I am very familiar with and have been using IEMs almost exclusively on bass since 2006. I currently use very good quality custom molded Ultimate Ears UE6. We are using the Behringer X32 compact and I use an iPad to manage my own channel and monitor mix. As of now I have created my own dedicated effects channel and utilize the Delay + Chamber reverb algorithm. This was the best sound I’ve had so far using in ears with my steel, with no amp on stage. In the past I’ve tried using the Peavey Trans TubeFex or a mic’d Nashville 400 and the sound I’ve created is very close to the mic’d amp sound. Next I am going to experiment with inserting the guitar amp model on my channel.

Signal path at my last show was SD10 Lashley Legrande, Goodrich L10k, Radial J48 DI, X32 input with only the channels EQ and compression (set for my FOH tone), and then the Delay + chamber verb effect which is digital delay and medium sized room reverb. Live recording from an iPhone in the audience sounded better than I’ve ever heard my tone before even mic’d amp, and the in ear mix was very tolerable (anyone who has tried IEMs with steel can probably understand why I choose the word tolerable LOL). Monitor send comes back to me either via the Behringer PM1 or a powered wedge. In terms of using the powered wedge it does defeat the purpose of going direct without an amp onstage because I find my volume to be on par with my Nashville 400, but a good quality wedge (like RCF) sounds equally as good.

This works very well for a DI if you know how to adjust parametric EQs.

I have also used a little hot spot monitor to decent success.

As much as I have looked I guess I never came across the Q strip. If I didn’t have control over my boards channel strip I would definitely need this! Very interesting, I may have to get this in case I play direct and don’t have control of my sound at the board.

I’m really interested in how you set your eq on the X32....

I would have to look at my channel for the specific frequencies but I set the EQ type to hi pass/low pass. When I am mic’d the EQ on my Nashville 400 is set nearly flat, so I looked at the frequency response curve of my speaker (Eminence em12n) for inspiration. This gives me a quasi “cabinet filter” effect. From there I fine-tuned everything to my liking through my IEMs. I can tell you IMHO I couldn’t get a more studio quality sound from my setup without some serious cash on a Kemper or something along those lines. I pulled my ears out during a set and couldn’t believe it was me that I was hearing.

As I was posting the above pictures I realized that I have also switched from a Goodrich L10k to the Hilton Pro model VP. I am a fan of pot pedals and have my original Emmons for backup, but the Hilton blew me away. Having a consistent tone throughout the VP sweep is a big factor when using IEMs. A pot pedal (even the active Goodrich) had too much affect on where my steel sat in my ears.
