I am thinking seriously about a shiny new, or lightly used S10 steel with 5 and 6 or even 6 and 6... Probably will use a GeorgeL 10-5 pickup, or some kind of coil tap pickup from jerry Wallace.. not sure yet..
It will need to be be a lacquer guitar with finish similar to an old Bud, or perhaps the way Bill Rudolphs Williams, or Ed Fulawka's finishes look..Both have sweet looking finishes.. You know,, like a piece of gorgeous maple furniture..
At this point, I am thinking hard about a new Desert Rose.. They seem to have a nice balance between price, looks, quality and most guys that own them are in love with them... Before I pull ANY triggers however, I would like honest opinions on the Desert Rose, and would sincerely appreciate comments and suggestions on ALL brands that offer lacquer finishes...Having said that, also keep in mind PRICE point is somewhat critical... I need to make this as reasonably priced as I can... Can't afford the top priced brands most likely, but I will have a couple of grand+ to play with... I value any ideas, and if you don't wish to reply here PLEASE email me!!! I hope to hear from many of my friends here bob |

Bill Rulolph offers his Williams guitar in a lacquered model at NO additional price over a mica guitar. What a deal!
PS: Bill uses a new finishing process that is SOOOOO durable that it is immune to even finger polish remover. So if you happen to be doing your nails while sitting at your steel , not to worry! |

Other possibilities are Mark Giles' Star guitars, and MSA Legend guitars. Mark does fantastic inlay and finishes for the Star as well as several other manufacturers.

Hey Bob - I don't know what your time frame is, but Mark Giles at Star is finishing up a new SD-10, 3 X 5 for me and it should be delivered in a couple of weeks. I'll post some pictures when it gets here....I believe he's got a natural finish SD-10 finished and ready to ship. I know he can build anything you want, and he is an absolutely great guy to work with. |

Jeff Surrat along with Dwayne Marrs and A.J. Nelson make the closest cabinets to a a Sho-Bud but Mark Giles is great on refinishing cabinets and his inlay work is second to none. You can see his work in the new Star Guitars as well as the Carter guitars which are also drop dead gorgeous. Also Derby does a good job on their sunburst lacquer guitars. They had one at convention 4 or 5 years ago and I still think about how pretty it was. |

Bob, Gary Carpenter, and Mark Giles are in the process of building me a Rains SD-10, 5 and 6, black laquer finish with diamond inlay on the front apron and on the wood neck. I am very excited. I'll be headed back to Texas soon to pick it up. The price was good, and the craftmanship speaks for itself.

Bob, I don't see how you could go wrong with a Williams. I love mine and Bill is great to work with. The finish is some kind of fine.

If you love those Sho-buds, I'd seriously consider getting an old one and have Duane Marrs do the rebuild thing with a new mechanism.
I'll second the Fessenden recommendation, they are great sounding and looking guitars.
I'd suggest a Franklin, but Paul's not building laquer guitars anymore.

Hey Bob,
Sounds like what you need is a ZB with the Greg Jones finishing touch!

Also, you need to take a look at a Fulawka when you get the chance. Ed builds an outstanding looking and sounding guitar. If you don't believe me, just as Ricky Davis. I have one and it's fast becoming my favorite. |

You won't go wrong with the Desert Rose. Chuck won't tell you but he has done laquer work for a couple other name builder's. That should say something for his work.

Hey Bob, those Desert Rose guitars are excellent guitars for an all lacquer finish, I played one that my friend Gary Phillips had in a jam session and it was smooth on the pedals, tone like that of a Sho-Bud, and also you might consider a used Sho-Bud and have John Coop set it up for you or refinish it for you, he does restorations on Sho-Bud's. |

Hey Pat, I had Greg Jones refurbish my 68 D-11 ZB Ser # 0017, and if you insist that he doesn't ship it back to you, that you will pick it up in Kentucky, you can hustle a free ticket to the Renfro Valley show where Greg picks. I did.

I went to see Greg in July and he brought his Mullen s-11 and a ZB s-11 both sounded and looked great. Go see Greg if you have a chance. He is Great player. He too can fix up a ZB s-10 for you bob.

Bob, don't forget to also consider a new Show-Pro, built by Jeff Surratt, and played by Lloyd Green and Steve Henson. It compares in looks to a Sho~Bud, and if Lloyd G. and Steve H. endorse it, you KNOW it's gotta sound good. |

I forgot about the Sho-pro guitar, it to is an excellent guitar, much like a Sho-Bud and has sho-bud sound or close to it. |

Erv, I think you have way too many guitars in the corral and need to thin the herd out.......... The new Williams are very nice. I was able to stop at Bill's shop a couple months back & he gave me the 50cent tour. His new lacquer finishes (which I've always preferred)are superb! |
