I thought some of you might find this story interesting or inspiring. Unfortunately I suspect none of the cuts will ever receive airplay or publicity.

Back in the the late fifties and early sixties Jerry Lee Lewis used two drummers during his performances.

It was not unusual for him to give a three or four hour performance when playing solo shows. Many times the back up musicians were locals and it was difficult for drummers to play with speed and intensity for that long.

I saw him twice and he used two drummers both times.

If you notice, he always has the same guitar player with him, kind of standing over his shoulder.
I think he's the one who gets the rest of the musicians in line. Very Happy

Really glad to see him back up and at it.

Yeah, the great Kenny Lovelace, who has been with The Killer for a long, long time. He's been with Lewis every time I've seen him, which is several times over quite a few years.

What amazed me the first time I saw him was what a great country singer he is. I was young, clueless, and expecting nothing but old-school rock and roll, and he blew everybody away with his country stylings.

As a very young teenager I saw him perform at a festival in England. I believe he was banned there for a few years, for reasons some of you may know. There were lots of rockers with their BSA's and Triumph's. There was a clash when Timebox who came on before him, wanted to finish their set and were insulted. There were some pretty violent scenes. Pretty scary fo a fourteen years old!
The festival:

I was watching an Austin City Limits show with Jerry Lee on it.
The guitar player, Kenny, knew what was coming up and moved out of the way before Jerry Lee knocked the piano stool backwards and stood up to play! Very Happy

As a piano player, I've always admired JLL... but not so much for the rocking, keyboard kicking stuff. He plays country, blues, gospel, etc. really well.

Years ago I was doing a gig with Johnny Rivers and we were opening for Jerry Lee.
At the load in & sound check he sat at the piano for quite awhile and played some of the coolest stuff I'd ever heard him play. No flash, just blues, gospel, country roots type playing. Totally unlike what you'd expect to hear from The Killer.

I gained a new appreciation for him that day.

And yep...Kenny was on the gig.

Another Place, Another Time - yeah, that's the one I was talking about above. The whole album playlist is great. He played it the first time I saw him - I'm guessing '69 or '70. I went in expecting a solid line of stuff like Great Balls of Fire and Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On (which he did eventually play), but he went through most if not all of the songs on that album and blew everybody away. His blues-infected country is amazing.
