Does anyone know why Carter has an "idler shaft"? I think this is on the A pedal, but it could be the B. Just curious Thanks JP |

Seems to me that it was on the B pedal for the 6th string and evens out the pull between the 3rd and 6th strings- I'm sure that someone from Carter will help out here~~ |

Jim's got it exactly. It gears down the pull on a plain string 6th to synch it up with the pull of the 3rd. |

As stated, that is exactly why the geardown shaft is used. |

Nothing much to see, Lee. It's just an extra cross shaft.
--B pedal pulls cross shaft.
--For 3rd string, rod goes from bellcrank to changer.
--For 6th string, rod goes from bellcrank to bellcrank on another cross shaft (dedicated to this task). Rod goes from bellcrank on idler cross shaft to changer. The mechanical advantage comes from the selection of puller positions at each end of each pull rod. |
