I have no idea who Fraser McAlpine is. He’s just another bump on the log for all I care, though he has a pretty cool sounding name. I just wonder if understanding this point of view holds any value for steel players, or do we just shrug it off as nonsense.
There was a time in my own youthful ignorance when I found country music distasteful. But of all the many reasons I could cite that have since been corrected, the sound of pedal steel was certainly not among them. Lumping it in with ukelele abuse and auto-tune is taking the logic for the case to a new low. |

some people are turned off by the sound of steel guitar, pedals or no. others prefer one over the other. but I've had so many people come up to me at gigs and tell me it's their all-time favorite instrument.
last time I checked, accordion and bagpipes were way more irritating than ukulele and pedal steel. most top ten lists like this one are just meant to draw people in and stir the pot, I can't really take them seriously.
I think the main irritation with any instrument is whether it's in tune or not, and pedal steel does suffer in this regard more than most instruments

I'm not offended. He seems to have it in for everybody. All he says about PSG is that some people don't care for it. He could have said the same of any instrument.

one of the last times I was down on lower Broad, I was overwhelmed by the sound of crash cymbals coming from almost every bar. it was utter cacophony
and maybe it's because I live in a heavy bluegrass town, but I'm pretty sick of mandolin anymore.

All musical sounds come into being for a reason, then someone ends up over-using them. Autotune seems to have strayed from being a subtle remedy to becoming a deliberate effect. But then tape delay and LSD were discovered by accident.
My Most Irritating Sound is the sort of guitar playing that singer/songwriters do, which seems to consist of randomly strumming a bunch of notes which lie conveniently under the left hand fingers but form few recognisable chords. I know it's all about the words and they have no ambition in the guitar department but it's irritating and it makes all their songs sound the same even when they may well be trying to tell different stories. Then they move the capo, which raises your hopes, but no.
There are honourable exceptions, of course.

I have to remove ukulele from my list now, just watched James Hill do a Michael Jackson cover of Billie Jean! What music and percussion he developed from that little music machine!

The only other Frazier I know of (not the TV show) was Barry Friedman/Frazier Mohawk. Having once been manager for Buffalo Springfield, I trust his musical sensibilities do not suffer like McAlpine's.

I agree! It's like arguing over which color is better, blue or orange. But I have to say, some people's anatomical parts are more attractive than others!
So here's a good list:
Whining
Eating, chewing, and slurping
Snoring, sniffing and loud breathing
Mobile ring tones
Alarm clocks and car alarms
Polystyrene rubbed together
Nails or squeaky chalk against a blackboard
Clicking pens
Dogs barking
Mosquitos and flies

I'm not sure I understand this. Few recognizable chords?
An example of this?
In my experience, singer-songwriters are either good instrumentalists as well as good writers, or they are mediocre instrumentalists merely using their instrument to support the lyrics (as you say), but those also tend to rely on a band that provides a more interesting backup. |

Probably an unpopular choice, but my alternative to Joan for the MOST annoying sounds in modern music is Bob Dylan singing standards.
