This is an absolutely amazing guitar. Every small detail is thought of and dealt with in the most precise, player-thoughtful way. Example - it's VERY light (around 30 pounds, maybe) but doesn't move at all as the knee tensions are set with that in mind. It is absolutely flawless, and sounds like my 2-pickup 400 in the middle position...on steroids. Exactly the tone I could NEVER find in an E9 guitar.

Thanks for work above and beyond the call of duty by Bobbe Seymour for working out a way-more-than-fair trade in, and then some!

Now I FINALLY have something to use with all the E9 stuff folks have sent me...and the 400 is sitting right across from it, so I can "learn a lick", swing around and work it out on the Fender as well.

No guitars spending more time sitting upside-down on the workbench for the first time in a year! Playing rather than fixing. Wow, what a concept.

Any of you who have not checked out GFI's are losing out on something very special. I've played a LOT of guitars over the last 6 months trying to find a good E9 machine, and this little red monster just buries anything I've tried, tonally and mechanically. It's SO s-m-o-o-th playing as well. Can't ask for more than that.

Jim, David and Sonny, you guys know your stuff.
The interesting thing about GFI is that the other manufacturers also hold this guitar in very high esteem, regardless of the compitition aspect.
It does my heart good to have other great builders look at this little steel guitar and pay it high compliments. This guitar has acquired great respect in the industry.
Many road players along with some name studio players have choosen this GFI Ultra to be their number one steel guitar.

Very fine guitar. GFI makes a great guitar. I've got a blue one just the red one, just came in today on a trade. I've set and played for nearly two hours. Nice.

Jim, Looks like you have a great guitar there. I'm glad you are able to get to playing instead of "wrenching" for a change! Cool how things work out in your favor once in a while! Way to go!!

Just got back from seeing earnest bovine play his GFI at a local gig - fantastic playing, great tone, and Doug's a good guy as well - took the "guided tour" of his, which has a 12 string steel neck and an 8-string (strung for 6) regular guitar neck played flat like a dulcimer. Very wild! His is an early one Gene made, and there are a few diferences but mostly very similar. It was nice hearing one in a band mix live and hear how well it cut without needing the piercing treble so many steels seem to have - big, gutsy, "up front" tone...nice!

So, you're a GFI guy now. I assume you and Doug will be starting a new club?

I am gathering that the Sho-Bud has moved on, to the home of a more tinkery-oriented tinkerhead? I love to fool around with stuff myself, but I had to realize, I don't get much playing done if I fool with stuff all the time. Having (re)started steel at 43, I have come to see that I'll need at least three more lifetimes to even get close to what I want with my playing. Now all of my tinkering is strictly results-oriented. Oh sure....

Jim,

I have to say that this was a pleasant surprise. I thought you were pretty die-hard into the Fenders (and non E9 for that matter) and I didn't catch that you were thinking of doing this. Glad you have the E9 to play with and even more happy for you that it is a GFI Ultra. I can see that this guitar will provide a pleasant contrast to the Fender, both giving you much enjoyment (but this one to mostly just enjoy playing rather than working on-but I bet you'll still be in there messing around). Excellent!

Email sometime.
