For about 3 weeks I've been experimenting with several TM amp settings, using my MSA D-10 Legend.
But first, regarding my Ibenz electric solid body I've used Sam Ash's manger setting which I'm very please with. (Chris is an awesome pro Tele player.)

Using my MSA D-10 Legend along with a Telonic pickup, & Vol Pedal here's what happened,
One day, as usual, I played a backing track of Buddy's SAME OLD ME using my own TM setting.
I was sort of satisfied but I wanted to hear the full
instrumental version of this song played by Buddy including the amp sound differences as I played along with him.
What happened next surprised me, while I playing along with him the sound of my TM was not the same as his amp sound, mind you, I wasn't trying to sound exactly like Buddy, no one can, just the same amp/steel sound as his, sort of like in unison. He was also using a different steel & amp in his studio recording.
With in under an hour I finally was able to duplicated the same amp & steel sound as Buddy, now you have to realized his playing was recorded in a professional recording studio, I'm playing live in my den. I kept playing with him over & over, then it was time to use the backing track. Sure enough to my delight, I sound much better, the TM came through

Now, it doesn't stop there!!!
I tried the same with David Hartley's APARTMENT #9
Using my own TM amp setting, my tone & Reverb was off by a mile.
So again I played along with David trying to duplicate his amp and steel sound.
It took me about 20 minutes to duplicate his amp & steel sound regarding this steel song.

Question; when we play along with backing track that some pedal steel icon produced, ie, Emmon's, Rugg, Hughey and along with a dozen others, are we trying almost to duplicate their style and amp/steel sound? If so, then it seems we will need to re-set our amps to their matching amp/steel sound of what ever song we are trying to copy!
Perfect examples of various amp settings & sounds are Jeff Neman's PROFEX II settings, all 123 of them, he has about a dozen pro steel player settings.
So, what say you on this subject matter. |
