Ray..Unless changes in design have been instituted, the cavity in a GFI guitar is cut specifically for the factory pickup(GFI II is closely based on the George-L E-66)and is solidly mounted so there are no provisions for adjustment. You may want to measure the '705' to determine the height difference if any. If the 705 is taller, may bring the unit too close to the strings. FWIW: I had great success with an Alumitone in my GFI. New mounting holes needed to be drilled but the distance from pickup top to strings was nearly perfect, tone improved as well. |

Definitely measure. I have had bad luck fitting Bill Lawrence pickups in both a Carter (replacing George L pickups with 710's in this guitar) and a Mullen Royal Precision (replacing the stock single coil with an XR16). I had to use a Dremel tool to shave the baseplate to fit in the openings. Had to shave off a lot. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . I have had to cut the tabs off wide mount pickups to get them to fit the pickup cavity on GFI guitars. I guess they might have since changed, but historically, they would not fit without modification. |

Raymond..I installed a 'Bass bar' (4.0") in mine. This model is actually designed for five string bass guitars but sounded great in my GFI. FYI: If you are not already aware, the Alumitone pickups mount through holes in the top of the pickup, there are no mounting tabs present and therefore will not become an issue. |

What is the difference between the GFI II and the GFI III pickup. The III is very sharp to me, and was wondering if a Bl-705 or 710 might improve my tone. Playing through a Nashville 112. _________________ GFI Ultra SD10 3x4,

I recently installed Lawrence 710's in my D-10 Ultra. The 710 mounting plate has to be slightly narrowed. I cutout the mounting rings for the GFI pickups to accommodate the 710's, which are square (not rounded like the GFI or George L's). The 710's height turned out to be just right with the bottom of the pickup touching the body.

I love the GFI-II. It is very warm and full-ranged. I have heard that it is preferred by players over the GFI-III, but I haven't compared them personally.
If your tone is too bright, then I would definitely try either a GFI-II or an E-66. |
