You could ask a friendly associate privately how long it's been for sale, after 90 days they start thinking about price drops and after about 150 they'll be feeling pressure to do a price drop. _________________ - keyless Sonny Jenkins laps stay in tune forever!; Carter PSG

The ad says: "Vintage 1975 Sho Bud Professional Pedal Steel Natural Lap Steel Natural"
Ask the pros at GC how you play a LAP steel in your lap with the legs and pedals attached.
Please take pictures or a video so we can all see. |

Well, if the old Sho~Bud pickup went bad, and the closest available pickup was a GeorgeL, that could be the "reason" why someone would do that to an old Sho~Bud. I'd say most owners of that vintage 'Bud probably weren't aficionados of brand correctness.
And pricing is, of course, also relative. To those of us who remember buying a used 'Bud S-10 for $750 or less... like myself..., yes it's overpriced. But someone young just getting into steel and used to "vintage" prices, maybe not so much overpriced after all. And if they can walk into a store and there it is, as opposed to buying sight unseen online or at a far-away location, I can see the attraction.
And probably a reasonable counter-offer would snag that guitar, I reckon.

Hi Bud!
I am well. Hope you are too.
I already have a few pro level steels to hone my craft so I have no need for a Maverick.
My interest in the Shobud at Guitar Center is mostly nostalgic since I used to have one like it back in the mid to late 70's (with the birds-eye maple). I wanted to know if it can be fixed before I entertain any thoughts of negotiating a deal though. |

The pickup isn't really the problem with the price, although the GeorgeL changes the character on a Bud too much for my taste.. I had an old Pro I with one, and it really detracted from the signature sho bud sound.
To get that guitar up to snuff for most players it needs 2 levers at around $300+ if the owner can do it, or $ 500+ if he can't do it himself.. There are nice s10 Buds available that are properly equipped ready to play out there for less... GC is notorious for stupid prices..

Typically the loose leg is NOT due to a stripped thread.. Most often its the insert plug thats fitted into the tube of the leg.. They can usually be tightened up with a hammer and punch as long as you are not ham handed with tools... Also i have seen a few guys remove the insert smear it with JB Weld, set it back in and have no further problems.. In any case, its NOT a major problem.. You can also just buy a new leg for $50 including shipping.. IF the threads are bad which I have personally never seen, then any decent mechanic can put a heli coil in if you can't do it yourself.. Probably cost as much or more than a new leg if you have yo have it done for you... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

A wobbly leg could be from erosion of the threads in the endplate if the guitar was habitually transported set up in the back of a vehicle. The threaded insert in the leg tube is steel; the threads in the endplate are aluminum. So when the guitar body moves but the legs don't, steel wins. Same with carrying the guitar set up but upside down, resting on the strings. When the pedal rack moves but the guitar doesn't, steel wins.
Also with the scratches on the endplates from staples in the cases under the velvet. We've all seen them. Guitars go through wear and tear just being set up, moved around onstage, torn down and put back in the case, just normal usage that's to be expected in a used guitar. But I'd be skeptical of a guitar habitually transported without being cased.
Like everyone said previously. Buying new or nearly new from a trustworthy dealer/seller or builder is the easiest way. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

The Sho Bud in Oregon looks like a Cross-Over model, not a Pro II. And it's certainly not a lap steel. Ernie Hagar used to play one of those back in the late 70s when he was in Reno. _________________ It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing. |
