Yesterday I decided that my third string, instead of sounding nice and bright, had become nasty and bright like a bandsaw. So I changed it and it's nice again.
A reminder that a string can fail before it breaks.

Incidentally, how many are familiar with Rotosound strings? They're English, made in Kent. We also have all the usual suspects imported from the States, but Rotosounds work fine on pedal steel.

Not familiar with Rotosounds, but AM familar with Kent...spent some time in Sevenoaks & Ightam; some beautiful country there. Great B&B, too.

In the early 70's Rotosound Bass strings were the favorite of many Nashville bass players. I worked at Little Roy Wiggins' Nashville lower Broadway music store and we sold more Rotosound bass string sets than any brand.

I used to use Rotosound flatwounds for bass. They were good

Some strings after being used for while start changing their flexibility. Where the string bends going over the changer finger, The flexing hardens the string metal in the bend. The hardened area in the string will not flex and conform perfect with the changer finger. The string will then lift up off the changer finger and you start getting the %#@*$@# sound from the string.

To check, A piece of paper slide between the string and the changer finger. If paper slides in between the string and the changer finger,Proves the string has hardened and lifting off the finger.

The next thing that will happen, The string will break in the hardened area, Sometimes breaking a 3rd small sliver out of the string where it fractures.

Great explanation, Bobby. I'm glad I changed it when I did! I shall listen out for 4 and 5 too.

Just before a string breaks the guitar will start sounding out of tune no matter what you do.

I suppose that's because of the hardening and fatigue that Bobby describes.
