I need some help with the 5 string on my Zumsteel. I took all the strings off to polish the guitar and put on new strings. Problem is, I can not get the levers/pedals on this string to work right. The strings are the same gauge and brand I always use. Now I can not get the knee levers to work and the B string does not always go back to pitch after using the A or C pedals. If a little more info would help you help me, send an e-mail so as not to tie up bandwidth on the forum.
Thanks
James

Thanks Tony. I did a search this morning before I posted and saw somewhere that if the string was not straight from the roller to the key, it could cause a problem. I will check that tonight. Thanks for your input

Without the tension of a string on it, the pulling chain-----from pedal to cross shaft to bellcrank to pullrod to changer----can possibly get corrupted. Look underneath to see that all the pull rods are properly seated in the bellcranks---that is the easiest place for something to go astray while there is no string holding things in position.
(This is a general thought--not Zum specific since I've never been under a Zum.)

Yes Jon, that may be part of the problem. I think some of the rods slipped out of the bellcrank fingers. I can not get my levers and one pedal that lowers to work right. I have spend hours working on this thing. It has become a major headache. James

Tony, I feel SOOO stupid. I went back and checked my sets of strings and found that the 5 string was a .017 and I usually use a .018. I changed it out and dang, it all tuned up just like it was supposed to. I am gonna make a note on a address tag or something and put it under neath the guitar or something and NEVER do that again. I have worked on that thing since Saturday night. Now I can rest. Thanks for the suggestion. I was about ready to find a steel tech. I am outa hear for now. Feeling foolish in Texas,
James LOL

well for my money..
changing a 50 cent string before ripping into a $5000 Guitar is a first step..

congrats..
you're fully trained now !

I have been a Field Service rep for a major company for years..decades..and I can't tell you how many times I have ripped apart HI TECH Electronic systems only to find the problem was a simple 1 minute fix...and I didn't ask the appropriate questions ahead of time...or properly evaluate the issue at hand..

Live and learn, but we are supposed to remember what we learn !

Thanks Gary. I got it worked out. I changed to an 18 string instead of the 17 and everything worked just like new.
