He was 15 years old when this was recorded.

Is this the same Glen(n) Campbell who went on to become a major star?

I just looked him up. It's not the same guy.

Glenn is very accomplished for his age.

This is not that Glen Campbell, but Glenn Ross Campbell who went on later to play steel guitar in the groundbreaking So Cal band The Misunderstood, and later in Juicy Lucy.

Cool videos. I have a surf band, but I'm mostly on guitar. We've been rehearsing occasionally with steel, I need to integrate it more. Here's Deke Dickerson doing Gutterball on steel: https://youtu.be/ZtQrxQSHgDg

BTW, these guys have been discussed previously:

Thanks to Dave Z and Dave M for sending me down yet another youtube rabbit hole today. I had seen the Juicy Lucy stuff but wasn't aware of The Misunderstood.

For some more recent footage of Glenn, check this out:

He also played on some records for the Dirty Blues Band before Juicy Lucy, toured with Joe Cocker and played with Sammy Hagar a bit....

I guess one of his steel heroes was Curly Chalker. From what I can tell from my research, he was experimenting with the non conventional steel sounds back in the day before he was old enough to play in honkytonks. He joined the Misunderstood in 1965 I think....he's kind of a pioneer of rock steel that gets overlooked......

Not sure if that surf tune is pedal steel or non pedal. I hear he favors the non pedal and used it for most of the Misunderstood, Juicy Lucy and Dirty Blues Band stuff. I think his tuning was a Dm7 - F D C A F# D A D.

He lives in New Zealand and still plays and records some I hear. I had some email correspondence with him a few years ago. Real nice guy!

Here's Glenn p[laying a keyless Williams in 2016...53 years after that surf instrumental was recorded.
