I recently purchased an MSA Classic 5 pedal from a friend in North Dakota who said it had been in the case in his basement since about the late 70’s. I am new to this venue; however, I have been told MSA didn’t make a five pedal Classic. I guess the proof is in the picture. I would like to research this as it is serial number 1C3794. Does anyone how I would go about this?
Thanks,
Chuck

Charles,
I bought a new MSA S-10 in June 1974 that also had 5 Pedals and 4 Knee Levers...it was white. I don’t recall seeing another 5 pedal single neck until seeing yours. A fine looking steel. Someone here on the Forum has MSA serial number info and maybe they’ll chime in...Carl

I have MSA SN.1C2921 It was Born July 9,1974. It is what I think they called Drift Wood White with black trim where yours is chrome. When I bought it in about 1999 it had 4 pedals and 4 knee levers. It has the pedals set in to the right similar to your guitar. It was my play guitar till Dec. 2017 It went into storage, When I went to a GFI 12U.

There is a Forum Member name Kyle Bennett kyle@msapedalsteels Sorry I don't know how to make this a click on to send him an E-mail. He had Marice Anderson's records of the old MSA guitars and will hopefully look up the serial number and advise you of the guitars pedigree.
Happy Steelin.

Well, whoever told you that MSA didn't make any 5-pedal, single-neck Classics was just plain wrong. The "standard" model CS-10 came with 5 pedals and 4 knee levers. Of course, you could get more or less by special order, but a good many 5+4 models were sold.

I'd guess your guitar, sn 1C3794, was made in November or December of 1974.

As Donny said the 5 and 4 was very common.. had at least three 5 and 4 S10's from the factory myself over the decades. I recall the 2 extra pedals had changes that were of no value ... One of them on mine was the 2nd string lower 1/2 tone.. already had that on a knee lever.. The other was maybe a string 5 B to C.. something weird like that... It was a good thing however, as it got a new young steel player underneath his guitar right quick, learning how to set it up, and make changes... bob

I wonder if the 5 pedal arrangement might have been intended to make the steel marketable for players who may have wanted a single neck C6. Question

I’ve got a Classic same era. 5 and 5. Built by Wally.
That little guy holds its own against some classy roommates.
Well built and under rated, in my humble opinion. Fun to play.

the term on the stick on tag usually stated-
"Final assembly and certified correct by Wally"

I think I had an MSA once that had that label with Bud's[Carter] name on it.. Most of the original MSA's I have seen said Wally, but I really don't know who he is... bob

If there is blue lock tite on the cross shaft (round shaft) it could possibly be the one I had back in 84’.

For whatever it's worth, your guitar was made between 1970 and '75, and was probably assembled by Bud Carter.

Those old MSAs were built like tanks. Even after 40+ years, they are still great instruments. I played mine for 25 years and only switched to the Millenniums because of their lighter weight.
