I have a NV112 and when it is first turned on it gives a hefty BAMM! This is probably a common issue. What's up with this?

Maybe you're leaving the master volume turned up. Just a thought.

That shouldn't matter - we don't all have to turn the volume down before we switch on.
It's more likely a defective capacitor either in the power supply (smoothing) or at the front end (DC blocking).

I've had 4 or 5 Peavey amps over the years and they all did that. It's nothing to worry about IMO.

Just picked up a Nashville 400 and it does the same thing. I called Peavey and they said the same thing Ian said above, i.e. it is probably a capacitor that needs to be replaced.

Normal 400 and similar amps have a moderate soft power on thump, but it's not severe. I'm leaning toward Ian's comments. If you're having an attention getting, rafter rattling bang, you have a problem.

Since I've never owned a 112 however, I'll defer to the more familiar with this amp.

I just tried my (older model) NV112 and it has a very low level "click" when its turned on. No big pop like the older Peaveys like the NV400 does. From what I remember, talking to Mike Brown, the "pop" issue was addressed with a power supply redesign in the NV112.

Thus others are correct, if you are getting a loud pop its got a problem.

My Nv112 does not do it, its about a 2000 build. A very mild pop when powering off is all.

Every solid state amp I have ever owned gave a pop upon power on... (some very softly, others are loud)

This does not happen with tube amps, because the power tubes must warm up before they can amplify anything... including noise!

Also sounds like a bad capacitor to me too. Just do a visual for swollen capacitors and look for the culprit.

I had an amp that did that. I just cut the volume off when turning it on.

For some reason (?!) I always turn the volume down to 'off' before I power OFF an amp...it stays like that until after I power it ON again..

Can't remember who told me to do that decades (yes!) ago, but it has never failed me..through a LOT of amps, both SS & tubed.

Hi Jim ,
If you get a chance try plugging a cable into the power amp in jack. Then turn it on. If the Big Bang is still there then the issue is in the power amp area and could be a filter cap or other issues
If the loud noise is gone it would be in the preamp board area. That could be dirty input jack contacts, or the loop effects contacts, a bad IC chip or cap
Let us know if that helps isolate the problem

Ken, I tried your suggestion and the bang is gone! I will try cleaning the input jacks later today. Thanks!

Also press down on the IC chips to make sure they are seated good.
You can also isolate it closer by inserting a jack into return jacks on the post and Pre EQ
That may isolate it to particular IC in the pre-amp stage.
Also good to clean those return jacks as well.
