has anyone tried this tuning for a universal setup? I was thinking that i would leave my usual setup but just move it up 1/2 step.
There would be more open G and Em licks inside of C6 tuning w/ pedals 7/8.
Good for country, jazz and bluegrass.

Years ago the 3rd string had a tendency to break easily. I don't know, though. Maybe with a 24" scale and a Jagwire .011, it might just work.

exactly....that 3rd string was the culprit when i tried this on my uni12 push pull. it can't quite get up there without snapping on any B pedal moves.

i thought a different/heavier set of strings all the way across might do the trick.
how about a 12 on that string....and so on and so forth?

Playing with as many guitar based bands as I do, I can't imagine not being able to play E, A, and B7 in the lower register on open strings.

I did try that a couple of times, just makes the guitar so 'stiff' after you tune it up to the F9th/C6th, it is a great idea & maybe, just maybe with the right manipulation of string guages, it could work. But I soon gave it up & dropped it back to B6th/E9th. I have been back & forth from D-10's to S-12U's more times than I can count, still like the comfort of the D-10, but I love the weight of the S-12!! Never satisfied, typical steel player I guess!!

I'm with you, Rick. Plus, it seems like no matter what tuning reference you use, you will gain open string advantages in some keys and give them up in others.

If you raise the pitch on all the strings a half-step, you should use lighter gauge strings across the whole neck, not heavier. The idea is to keep the tension the same. If an 0.011 breaks on the A to Bb pull, then you could try an 0.010 or 0.009. I don't know if any makers of steel guitar sets have these, but guitar players use them all the time on ultra-light and slinky sets.

I use a bar/rod between the strings and the neck for a capo. Could get fancy and make a positionable flip up with rollers I suppose.

me wants a steel guitar capo
could just use a square side of dobro shubb bar (but wider for 12 strung)to hold against fret board and coat with rubber to not scuff fretboard, but also with rollers for strings and adjustable height
hmmmmmm
with my superbro or tube screamer and the extra 8th pedal i sure would love that dobro tuning inside of universal E9/B6

you would even get a 6 and a dom7 inside and around. a real useful pocket
