I've read that Noel Boggs played with Jimmy Wakely but wouldn't think it would be him that late in the 40's.

and Yes - I heard it the first time in Clay Pigeons.

Wakely recorded the song several times from 1942 into the 1960s.

The earliest version was a radio transcription. His steel player in that era was often Frank Marvin, but I don't know for sure if Marvin is on that particular track.

Likewise, Boggs was in and out of his band multiple times---but not in the early to mid 1940s that I know of.

Wakely used Pete Martinez a lot also, but not earlier than 1946 as far as I can tell. Pete typically sounded a lot like Boggs.

That recording sounds like it is from the early days of Wakely's career when he was recording with Johnny Bond and Dick Reinhart in various incarnations.

Wakely did a movie called "Moon Over Montana", released in early 1946, but I don't know if he did a freshly recorded live version of that song in that movie. If the Wakely band in fact did sing the song in the movie, they may just have pantomimed to the 1942 version.

So, I'd guess Frank Marvin, but that's all it is--a guess. Marvin best known for his work with Gene Autry.
