My amp has started making this weird sound when I turn it off. I won't even say what it sounds like, but I haven't been feeding it beans! Can anybody tell me what's causing this and how I can fix it? Maybe the coil gap?
Thanks, Brad

Sounds like the electrolytic capacitors are on their last legs. |

without more info you'll get too many responses. what is the amp? do you have a sound clip you can post? otherwise, take it to a tech.

I've heard that sound in your clip before, and I'm thinking what Donny said. Your "description" of it is exactly right on. _________________ MCI Arlington S-10 3+5, George L E-66, BJS & Emmons bars, Fender Stage Lead II 100W 1x12, Fender Satellite SFX, custom FX rack, 1983 Dobro 60D, Martin D16GT, Ibanez AS73, 1978 Rickenbacker 4000 custom. |

Thanks for the help. I got a schematic from Peavey so I'll have to get started. Just out of curiosity, what if I don't get to it right away. Am I going to damage things further? |

I seriously doubt it’s the filter caps.
An open input jack contact would be my first place to check
An ungrounded contact will cause strange noises
However if it does it with an instrument plugged in you can rule that out
The trick is to isolate what stage it is in. Then trouble shoot that stage of the amp
For example. If you have a power amp in jack you can plug a short cord in there. That separates the power amp from preamp. If that noise disappears then the trouble is in the preamp area |

Thanks, Ken. It does do it with an instrument plugged in, but I did some more checking as you suggested. I think I've isolated it to the Saturation control - the higher it's set, the more noise. I'm not sure what the problem actually is, but about the only time I use that channel is for Running On Empty and I can use an effects pedal for that. The clean channel is fine so I think I'm good to go with my lap steel. Whew!
Thanks again,
Brad |
