I had the good fortune of playing lead guitar in a group and Smiley played the steel...played at a local casino for a New Years eve dance. He was a great player. He played for many years with Les Gilliam's band around Oklahoma and Arkansas and all over really.
This is the obituary in our local paper about Smiley:
David E. “Smiley†Weaver, 88, of Braman, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully at home on July 11th, 2019. He was born on June 1, 1931, in Centrahoma, Oklahoma, to Dave and Sallie Weaver, and grew up in Ada, Oklahoma. He married Meda “Carol†Jeffries on September 15, 1949. Together, they raised four children, three daughters, Ann, Pam, and Vicki, and one son David.
He devoted his entire life to family and music. He was an accomplished steel guitarist and a great vocalist. Smiley and Carol owned Smiley’s Guitar House in Ada for over 30 years and helped many people with their own music careers. Smiley received awards such as Outstanding Western Swing Steel Guitar player in the Texas Western Swing Society, Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame, and in 2015, was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.
Survivors include three daughters, one son, seven grandchildren, a son in law, daughter in law, and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and his loving wife Carol of 65 years.
He wished to be cremated and a private memorial service held at his home in Braman for family members. _________________ Zum Encore, Remington D8 non pedal, Hallmark Mosrite clone, Gretsch 6120 DSW, Gretsch G5210T-P90 Electromatic Jet Two 90,1976 Ibanez L5, Eastman archtop, Taylor Dreadnaught, Telonics pedal, Squire Tele, Squire Strat, Fender Tonemaster, Gold Tone 5 string banjo, Little Wonder tenor banjo, 3 Roland cubes 30s and 80, Carvin combo bass amp |
