I just got through comparing all 3 of my MSA guitars. The new Millennium with a George L 12-1 pickup, the maple/lacquer one with the George L 5 position set on position #1 (humbucking,) and the dieboard/mica with a TrueTone.

Bear in mind that the older guitars have older strings, and this may be a contributing factor to the differences in tone. Everything else was the same. I plugged the volume pedal into the different guitars without changing the amp settings.

The Millennium was louder and brighter, and I felt that I could hear each individual not more clearly. The wood guitar had a darker more flute-like tone, almost as loud but not quite. Surprisingly, the dieboard guitar with the TT sounded thin and weak by comparison,

The difference between the Millennium and the wood guitar was pretty subtle, but I could hear a difference. Perhaps a better test would be to have identical pickups and new strings on both.

The next test is to take all 3 to the studio and compare how they record.

The Millennium will definitely be the guitar I use for playing live. I may continue to record with my older ones as well as the Millennium, so as to get different tones and textures in the recordings.

How close are you to Jim Palenscar's shop? I think Ed Packard stops by there sometimes with his meters and machines, and some objective data about frequency levels and durations might be really helpful in deciding which steel to use for what. Of course, with objective data about tone, there might be less to argue about on the forum and then what would people do? They might have to practice, or some such horror....

Mike, what guitar do you mean when you say 'the wood guitar' the Legend?

Daniel. I have 2 older MSAs from the 70s The one I called the wood one has a maple body with a lacquer finish.

This one is dieboard/mica

Gerry Walker, who makes the Stereo Steel amps, once told ne he thought my green guitar is the single finest sounding MSA he had ever heard. I wouldn't go that far, but it is a fine sounding guitar. It's the one I used on my recordings, which you can listen to at my web site.
