Helping a friend with with his Justice S10~3x4 (actually 3x5, it has a vertical lever). 2-raise/1-lower changer, 6-hole bell cranks.

My friend wants to move his foot pedals one position to the right. The pedal rack has an extra set of mounting holes to the right of the C pedal. Holes appear to have been used, and A-pedal is positioned farther left than expected. Perhaps the previous owner moved the pedals to the left.

Moving the pedals looks easy. What's involved in relocating cross shafts and stops for A, B and C? Can we shorten the existing pull rods and cut new threads? What size die?

This looks like an easy guitar to work on. But I'm no steel guitar mechanic. If I'm being naive, have at it and let me know. Thanks!!

Assuming it's a typical A-B-C setup with two pulls on each pedal, you only need to physically relocate the 1st pedal over to the 4th position. 2 and 3 can stay put, just shift the bell cranks on the second and third pedal cross shafts to the appropriate locations as required and use the same rods in the new positions - they're already the correct length. You only need to cut/modify the two rods for the pedal that moved over from 1st to 4th position. You'll obviously need to adjust travel and pedal height on all.

The rods are most likely 7/64", so the thread size will be 5-40 or 4-40. Either will work depending on what you have access to. 6-32 will work on 1/8" rods, but only cuts in a few thousandths on 7/64". Option B is to keep the existing rods intact, go to your local RC hobby store, they sell 3/32" steel rods with 4-40 thread already cut on one end.

Good luck!

I just did a lot of work adding pedals to my Pro Lite the S10 model isnt all that much different.

First, instead of cutting new threads, its easier to bend and trim the bell crank side of the pull rods after the position is changed. I'm sure thats the way Fred would have you do that as well.

Moving the cross shafts will only require you to move the outter most shaft and bearing mount to the innermost position. If you can get a clear photo of the undercarrage on that end of the guitar we can provide more specifics.

Make yourself a rod chart with the changer location, and bell crank holes so you can just move the rods and bell cranks around after you relocate the single cross shaft.

Other than mounting holes if needed in the undercarrage the only other holes you may need to drill will be in the pedal bar itself to move the pedal to its new location.

Shoot me a PM if any of that doesnt make since or you get stumped.

Note: I believe the treading on Justice rods is 5-40 should you need to take that route.

Thanks for the replies.

Ian, that's right, need to move just ONE pedal. Old A pedal becomes the new C pedal, old-B is now A, old-C is the new B.

We can see if it looks easier to move cross shafts with bell cranks intact, or relocate one shaft (leap frog) as with the pedals, then move bell cranks.

Benjamin, that's good advice to keep current threads, and trim at the hook end. Hand tools and a vice should suffice to make a new bend.

We found and fixed an A-pedal pull timing issue. String 5 started raising well before string 10. Remedied that by moving the string 10 rod into a lower hole on the bell crank (away from the shaft), then backing off it's tuning nut. Needle nose pliers to remove the retaining clip, a small flashlight, didn't even need to turn the guitar over. Took less than a minute.
