No trim to remove.....the metal surfaces are actually part of the extruded body which form a channel into which the mica fits. |

It’s similar to removing a fret board. Heat up one end and work the edge of the mica up with a hard plastic putty knife. Then keep heating and peeling the laminate off but, take care not to scratch any visible metal. Try and remove the mica in one piece as Jim P suggested. Once it is off, clean off any residual adhesive. |

It can be tough to remove the original mica w/o removing the trim as it can be difficult to get it to get under it with a scraper to lift it up w/o doing that. Just take your time- it's pretty much a breeze if you're not in a hurry. Also- when you are cleaning it and removing all the old adhesive you don't want to have to work around the trim- just pull it up. There are lots of sources of mica- perhaps one of the builders can sell you some from their stock as red is not a highly sought after color. |

Jim, maybe Sierra changed at some point but when I worked there (late seventies), there were no seperate trim pieces used in the cabinet. The front apron laminate was fitted between the raised horizontal bars which look like trim but were actually part of the extruded frame/body. Thus, the bars weren’t removable.

Thx for that Tony. Upon closer examination you are most likely correct. |

My Old Sierra's covering was changed out to Rose Red Birdseye Maple. It was beautiful. It was a Double 10. Don said it was an old Show Guitar... _________________ Steel Guitar players are members of a Special Family |

Hi Jack. No, I did not change it out. Don Christian & Company did that. I might have some pictures, but I'd have to dig deep, to find them.
There's a long story about that guitar, don't have time to go into it, but it's life was cut short by UPS. They dropped it off a semi trailer. Don told me he couldn't repair it, so we worked a deal on a New U12
The Birdseye Maple was about the color of this guys guitar case... Unbelievably pretty

from green to black carbon fiber finish in 20 minutes, and $35 , and when you get tired of the new look, you can peal it off in 2 minutes, and revert back to original... _________________ www.steelguitarsonline.com |

Damir:
Could you add to your note on the covering you used?
will it stay on as long as you want without beginning to peel off on its own?
Where did you find this material?
did you install a panel, then carefully trim off around it or did you pre-measure an exact size for each panel then install?
Then when you decide to remove or change to another kind, it does not damage the original panel is that right?
I bought the T-8 Sierra console from jerry Roller, it is on the way but I am thinking about this to update it's looks.
Thanks

Here is a picture I found of a similar color. You can find maple anywhere & stain it.
Some veneers come backed, which gives the wood some strength. That is what I would use, in lieu of formica... but the formica will resist scratching.

Tony is correct, there's no trim to remove on the Session models. |
