I’m thinking about doing a gig Saturday night with just an acoustic player. Played with a band about 5 years back but never with just a solo acoustic guitar. Any suggestions on how to approach that? It’s some older and newer country, probably 30 to 40 songs total. Don’t know the venue. Should I focus on comping chords with a few licks in the lyrics? What have others done in this situation? Not sure I want to commit, but it’s s chance to get out again (and the money is good, but that’s not the real driver). _________________ Mullen G2; Fender Tone Master Twin Reverb; Goodrich L-120 |

I suggest a rehearsal. Or at least a good long sound check, and run through a few of the tunes to find out how you sound playing together. That will determine what you play as much as any thinking about it will. |

I have a similar gig on the horizon. I've jammed with my guy a couple of times and found the best approach is to do the same as if it was a 5-piece - a few chords and licks. That's what prompted him to hire me - any more would get monotonous. My rule is "nothing before verse two" (unless it's a worked-out intro). _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

I do this often, not a big deal. Just keep it down and don't overplay, just like normal ! Actually these gigs are quite fun, more work than a typical full band gig. _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

I used to do it all the time.. Don't overplay, keep the volume down , you are playing with an acoustic guitar and singer, not a band. Provide nice "pads" for the vocals to lay on, and just fill the space with nice pleasant sound, not a lot of picking and plucking of single note runs..
I liked those types of gigs and you will as well... and as our friends here have said, you really need a good rehearsal, even several if you can swing it... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

I do these kinds of gigs. Volume down (of course) and brush up on rhythm and bass chops.
Your soloist reached out to me yesterday. I had a conflict.
Good luck & have fun.
