I know I'm going to get blasted for what I'm about to write but let the chips fall where they may. I've been privileged to be in a position over the years of my career to be an "instructor and/or teacher at various levels and in various subject matters. I was taught that part of being an effective teacher was to also be an 'ENCOURAGER'. There is ALWAYS something you can fin to encourage someone no matter how bad they may be.
As I was practicing my steel tonight and felt pretty good about how I was doing the thought occurred to me that all the " 5 professional steel guitar teaches" I've taken lesson from that not one single time that I recall was I ever given a word of "ENCOURAGEMENT'. Not once was I told something like, "well Clark you're making some progress here but you need to work on this a little more" or something like that.
I guess PSG teachers have never been taught the art of encouragement. If I had ever received one of those words of encouragement I would have prized that very much.Glad I'm just stubborn enough to keep going without the encouragement. As it turns out my wife is my all time best encourager and supporter.........glad I got that off my chest.......clark |

Lucky man. I have to encourage myself. I say things to me like, “Just think, a year from now you won’t suck nearly this much”. |

My dog often lays in front of my steel and when the playing gets too bad she leaves the room. Maybe she's trying to tell me something? |

Wow!
When I first started playing overhand three-quarters of the way through the last century, I took lessons from four different guys -- excellent musicians all -- at least two of which would be recognizable names to diligent observers of this Forum. I experienced the exact opposite treatment from all four. To a man, each was supportive and encouraging to the extreme. Perhaps it's something in the water back in the Promised Land. Or else "Minnesota Nice" was the rule, rather than the exception, back in the day. |

Not at all what I experienced in my lessons. |
