I need to cut an inch off my psg legs, my question is does anyone know how far the thread plug inserts into the leg. I need to make the cut, then punch the inserts out and re press it back into the leg. These are the heavy metal legs that come on the old MSA classics. The reason I need to know is I don't want to cut into the thread plug when I cut the inch off.
If I had a smaller diameter rod I know I could knock the insert out before the cut, but I don't want to buy one for just this once. Thanks for the help.. |

You have to get the insert out first! If you cut the leg off with the insert attached, it will be extremely challenging to get that little stub of tubing off the insert. You can use a piece of threaded rod, small pipe, a long socket extension, a jack handle, or even a large dowel (an old broom or rake handle) to knock out the insert.
(Pay VERY close attention to the order of the clutch adjustment parts that you remove. Many people put them back together wrong, and then complain the legs won't stay put.) |

If possible and you know someone with a lathe. Have the legs cut in a lathe. This will make the end true square and they can slightly bevel the inside for easy insertion . Or mark the cut line around the leg with a sheet of paper wrapped squarely around the leg, Hack saw around the line, Then file the leg square and bevel the inside slightly.
Do not use pipe cutters, They will force metal toward the center of the leg and be hard to refit the insert. The rollers on the pipe cutters may also break the chrome coating loose. |
