I found a ZB Custom for sale. Not sure what model it is...can you help me???
It looks like some sorta funky wood, a white Fretboard & the pickup says ZB Custom right on top of it.
If someone can tell me how to post pics, I will.
How much is a fair price for it?
Would it be a decent guitar to learn on?
Any help is much appreciated.

I'm not an expert but I have two ZB D-10s and they are much different. Looks like that one is mica and the keyhead doesn't have the "horns". Looks like it came off an MSA. The changer looks different. The logo and fretboard are correct.
My guess it's a custom job or a "Frankenstien" model.

Someone said that later models didn't have the longer horns...I could be wrong on that, I know next to nothing about Z.B.'s
I'm trying to figure out about how much it is worth, would it be good to learn on & how resellable is it if I should give-up on it.

Dave is right, it looks like someone has modified the changer, and the keyhead, (if it is a ZB) and built a shorter cabnet. If you know someone that is a player, take them with you to look at, and play it..If it is a "shadetree" job, I would pass.

I will try to find out more about it. I don't know any other pedal steel players in or around the area to go check it out. It is like 3-4 hours away.
I talked to an old ZB dealer who says he's pretty sure that it is original. One model above the student model.
I'll have to do some more lookin'

The tuning keys end looks pretty much the same as mine. Made around 1980. Get the serial number from under the guitar (should be near where you plug her in.) The guys will be able to tell you what tuning head should be on it from the serial. Get some pics of the undercarriage.

Not a bad price for a beginner's Z-B. It lacks the signature 'horns' on each end, as did their student model and some of the later ('80's models). I think it has the same keyhead aand changer as the student model, but the endplates says it's, indeed, the low-end pro model.
The good thing is, being it's at a pawn shop, you might get another $100 off. |

Joseph, If you happen to win the auction, can I have first dibs on the parts that you are planning on trashing?
Thanks, Dave Z[This message was edited by Dave Zirbel on 07 June 2006 at 10:02 PM.] |

I was thinking about driving out to the shop that has it & purchasing it...although I might have to sell my vintage Princeton Amp to afford it!!!
They want $649 for it in the shop & didn't seem to want to budge on it. It's at a pawnshop...which means I would be surprised if they gave $300 for it. The market for steel guitars in Kansas is almost non-existent!!!
Is $649 too much for it???
I've been encouraged by a forum member to try to buy it...he says it would be a good learner guitar. It's either that or wait for a used Carter-Starter to come up on the forum for cheap...like around $400 or so...I HATE BEING BROKE!!!
I was told that the ZB would be alot better than the Carter-Starter so I'm really interested in the ZB.
What do ya'll think about the situation???

With an older guitar it's hard to know what's going on with the changer, rollers, pullers, pedals, etc. When I was learning the basics of pedal steel, I didn't have anyone to explain to me the many things that can go wrong with a used steel. I bought an S-10 at a pawn shop and traded some valuable gear for it, only to realize later that the steel was a piece of crap. Seized tuners, missing screws, low quality parts, and on and on. Knowing what I know now, I'd steer away from that guitar unless you can bring an experienced steel player with you to look it up and down. Otherwise, I'd get a Carter Starter and use that for a year or so. That way you'll be able to learn about playing without having to become a steel mechanic right away. It's essential to know how these things work, but you want to spend the majority of your time above it, not underneath it. |

Aw, c'mon. That's a sweet lookin little ZB. Do you really have to destroy it? Wouldn't it be best to just get it happening the way it was meant to?

Brad,
If I end up getting it, I'm gonna leave it pretty much the way it is. Maybe fix it up here & there to like new condition.
Obviously, they ain't makin' anymore ZB's.
Although, Joe has a good idea...they are good bodies & good pickups to build a steel out of. If I had the time, parts, knowledge & money I would like to build a steel out of either an old ZB or an old Fender cable guitar and figure out how to modernize/accurize them while keeping their famous sounds.
***A bit of an update***
I've emailed them a few times asking how many pedals & how many knee levers it has...still no response. I've also asked for some more photos.
When I called them yesterday, they didn't seem to know Jack-Crap about steels. Now, I'm kinda leary about the whole deal.
You would've thought that they would've noticed the fretboard peeling up when they first posted it... but that picture & info was added later...scary!!!
I really don't want to drive 3 hours out & 3 hours back just to look at this darn thing...although I might have to just to inspect it & see if it is a treasure or a clunker!!!

Just found out it has 3 pedals & 2 knees. No controls for volume, tone or switches for coil tap according to the owners.
Thought I would share.

Do like Chris LeDrew said. I am a ZB player. This guitar is way over priced and probably needs work, and unless you know how to work on ZB's your in trouble. They have tuning issues without proper setup. Get a Carter Starter. |

I decided to buy a Used Carter-Starter. Tonight I found a great deal on one from a forum member.
I'm excited, I'm on my way!!! Thank you all so much for all the help on the ZB info & ideas.
Hopefully I made the right decision.
Good luck bidding Joe!!!
I hope it goes to a forum member & not some greedy idiot that can't appreciate something like that.
Have a good evening ya'll!!!
