Mark,
This guitar must have been built when Tom Brumley owned the company.
The knee levers on this guitar are a vast improvement over the previous ones I've seen on ZBs.

Hi Erv,
Feb. 3, 1966 sold to Jerry Boyonton. He was a popular sacred player. Liner notes on an album of his also says he backed George Jones. (learned through google) This is a Zane Beck guitar.

Here is some info on the original owner from the Steel Guitar Forum:

There was a guy named Jerry (Snakey) Boyanton who played the West Coast/Las Vegas clubs back in the late fifties through the sixties. I don't think he ever recorded with Wynn, or was a member of his band, but he may have worked with him on occasion. I only mention him here because he and Chalker were friends and Curly mentioned Snakey playing with Wynn in Vegas during a conversation a few years back. Ralph Mooney may have some knowledge of him.
According to Chalker, Boyanton was also friends with Zane Beck and Tom Brumley. After his Fender era, he almost always played D11 ZB Custom Guitars.
Cheers!

Mark I believe you mentioned on the reverb site that Paul Redmond updated the Knee Levers. Very nice work! Paul does great work.

Russ,
Mr. Redmond did a set up and fine tuning for the prior owner of this guitar.
He did not install the knees. I am of the opinion that the knees were custom to this guitar and installed at the time of original build. All hardware is circa correct and matches the rest of the guitar. The sho bud tear drop knee levers may or may not be the exception.
Kind Regards,
Mark

They look like Paul's handy work and different than anything Zane ever did. High quality for sure. All the best.

The top side looks great but the under-carriage looks cluttered and dated.

Actually, for a ZB, it's pretty clean and cutting-edge.

P.S. Can someone repost that Zane-era (1###) serial-number list?

I agree - the underside looks quite clean for a ZB.

Interesting to see Red Rhodes bought one of the first ones built. I've never seen a picture of him playing one, though - he kept that Fender of his as his main axe until at least 1970. Herb Steiner saw it, though, posting here years ago: "In 1966 Red was playing an 11-string ZB Custom, pre-Brumley era. He sold the guitar to Paycheck (who never paid him for it), who subsequently pawned it in San Diego in 1969. I saw it in the pawn shop there and told Red about it."

Beautiful guitar, Mark. How does it play?

i saw norm hamlet with merle in the spring of 67 and he had a zb. he's not on the list above so his must have been delivered just before i'd seen him. also tom played zb with buck on the tiger by the tail album recorded in december 64 so tom's delivery date was sometime in 64.
