Herzog Studios in Cincinnati

I read that Hank Williams recorded "Lovesick Blues" at Herzog Studios in 1949. He used session musicians that were supposed to be some of the best. I would like some enlightment on the session guys. Did they come up from Nashville or were they Cincinnati residents. Was Jerry Byrd the steel player on the recording. The article also mentions that Hank recorded "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" there. I ask because working on these two particular tunes, Jerry Byrd's tunings work better than Don Helms do.

He recorded the song several times, but the best known version is Byrd.

December of 1948, not 1949.

Tommy Jackson (fid), Jerry Byrd (sg), Zeke Turner (eg), Louis Innis (rg), Clyde Baum (man), Willie Thawl (bass).

I don't know Baum and Thawl. but Byrd and the other 3 guys were highly familiar with each other and recorded both on their own and backing up a lot of artists in Cincinnati studios. Tommy Jackson went on to great fame in Nashville; the others less well known but crack musicians.

I'm So Lonesome was from August of 49, with Byrd, Innis, Turner, Jackson and Ernie Newton on bass.
