Is the 1st string D or G?

If D, is the rest of the instructional setup mainstream C6th setup?

His website, as good as it is, doesn't shed any light on this.

Any any other comments welcome.

Thanks, bk

All of Doug's recent C6 tab (e.g., Jazz by Jernigan) has a high D string. He does have a few non-standard pedals and KLs though. One can still get about 90% of what he's doing without those nonstandard changes, though, and learn a tremendous amount from him.

Hope that helps.

Yes, thanks that's helpful. I've got some non-standard too, maybe there's an overlap.

More specifically do you (or does anybody else) know about the D vs G 1st string in the 2 courses 'Expanding Your Knowledge of C6th' and 'C6 50 Hot Licks'?

The Jazz by Jernigan CD is awesome, great listening imo.

Bob:

Doug does use a high D string now, However, the Emmons guitar Company has some old courses that Doug did with a high G string. The course is called "52 week C6th course" or something like that. I don't know how they sell it now, but it used to be in 13 week intervals. There is some really good stuff in this course, too. Some of the good songs that come to mind are "Sleepwalk, A thing called sadness, Panhandle Rag, Texas Playboy Rag, Home in San Antone, Mansion on the hill, and Together Again". Together Again is very similar to Curly chalkers version. Doug throws in some chalker licks throughout the course. This course uses a more standard C6th setup (5 floor pedals and 1 knee lever).

Cool

Evidently, Doug changed his tuning if he uses a high D string. The strings sold on the forum are listed "Doug Jernigan C6, stainless wound, high G".

If you want some G on top stuff look into Herby Wallace's courses for C6th.

I changed to the 1st string D long ago, so that's what I'm after. I have one of Herby's old C6th courses with the G 1st, and it's still useful to me but not completely.

Thanks for the comments.

Doug's old C6 course for Emmons has a nice version of "Rose City Chimes," too.

If you watch Doug’s intermediate C6 DVD, at about 6:00 into it where he says (referring to the first string) “I now play with a D on top, but this course was done with a G on top”.
This raises the question for me as to WHY he changed, and then why that motivation wasn’t also reflected in the course material. Seems sort of odd. I sure do like Doug’s playing though.

I had one of his original books from the late eighties I guess. It was great. I loaned it out and never got it back. Doug has great material
