i've never owned or played a cable pull guitar like this but am very into the Bakersfield sounds of the 60s etc. looking for advice on which Fender model is the best bet and any comments on this particular guitar. this one is for sale for $1000 CDN ($750 USD).

That's quite a good deal as the guitar seems in very good shape. ("Book value" on that model now is at least couple of hundred dollars higher.) It's a short scale, so that plinky "Bakersfield sound" will be there in spades, and because it has the cam bridge and roller nut, you won't be troubled with string breakage like the older long-scale guitars.

I have an older one that I still play occasionally, and it's a real hoot! Cool
