Norm Hamlet came to a a couple of our little Honkytonk style beer joints here in Charlotte Fri and Sat nights. I went to see him last night, as I had my nights mixed up about Fri, so I missed that. He was with Mario Carboni, and the two of them played the Bakersfield sound all night long. It was great!
I got to talk to norm a little before the show, and what a sweetheart of a guy he is. I could feel the history of American steel guitar as he told me the line-up of what he'd played on in his career (Rickenbacker, Fender, Bigsby, in that order). He got to Bigsby and Mario dragged him away to play. Boy, what a wonderful chance it was to meet and talk to one of the only very early hall of famers left - and a dadgum nice gent if there ever was one!
Sorry, the pic is a little dark, but that was the light, and the cell phone camera we had to work with

I have known Norm since we were both teenagers and in all the years since, he is as genuine as anybody you will ever meet. I remember a call from Norm to come over hear the new Texas Troubadour's album with the new steel player, Buddy Charleton. That was 1962. Yes, Norm is a very nice guy and being THE man for Haggard all those years never changed him a bit. He is the real deal. |

Norm just played on a Merle Haggard tribute record I produced for Larry Nix called "Hardly Haggard" (along with Jay Dee Maness, Lloyd Green, Eddy Dunlap and myself). He did a killer job! It's on Apple Music and Spotify and available at www.coastalbendmusic.com _________________ John Macy

They were great Tony. Shortly after I saw him that night, someone posted about minimalist players. Norm kinda fits that description. He plays what you'd expect to hear from a steel - no more, no less really. |
