im learning the solo to buckaroo by don rich, and im having trouble. the beginning of the solo sounds like its in the "pedals on" position, but sounds like he switches to open position, wanking on the B pedal for that major third to 4 riff. it sounds so seamless im wondering if the solo is in a position im not considering? |

For the 4 note try 2nd string lowered half step. (Feel stop on most guitars)

Bengt's tab looks spot on to me. Tom's solo is deceptively tricky, it's not easy to nail the fiddle reel/Irish jig phrasing and perfect palm blocking. But it's definitely worth putting in the effort.
(BTW British steel players never "wank on the B pedal"!! )

One of my favorite solos and his time is right in the pocket and swinging. Another brilliant little nugget by Brumley.
One thing I don’t see reflected in tabs is the ghost notes. I feel like he is bouncing off of Str 6 or Str 8 on various upbeats. Or maybe it’s the drums.
With the string 2 being part of the melody, that makes a wide spread of the right hand.
Are there any videos of Tom playing this solo? I’d love to see his right hand.
If you have video, please post!

Video lesson of Tom's steel ride. He's pretty close. Kinda funny watching everything reversed. 😆

Bengt's tab looks correct to me. That's how I've played it, when I could get a guitar player to learn the tele part, which is not often. _________________ It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing. |

tune the 2nd string down a half tone .
forget the lever.
I have no way of knowing if this is what Tom did in studio or not, but there are no rules. Drop that 2nd string natural note down a half step and don't worry about it. That half tone drop is pivotal in this particular phrasing.
next song bring it back up .
Its the note that matters not how we get there.
The timing of the phrasing is yet another matter and just takes seat time. Remove the pressure of getting that 2nd string note spot on.
Sometimes we take a real long path to get to something which can be made easier.
Oh and if we are seeking a no brainer Folsom right out of the book solo , same deal, drop that 2nd string natural note a half tone.
Its the music that matters. There is no rule book.
The entire purpose of levers and such is to be able to get to the right note ! How about start on the right note !
