DHL is the cheapest and most reliable, has been my experience.

Greg - I've had 4 pedal steel guitars and one dobro shipped via LCL carrier to the Philippines. Philippines is easier than many places because there are a bunch of businesses set up for average citizens to get stuff shipped to them - gifts from family overseas, Amazon purchases, or whatever. They exist, in part, due to an exemption you get from import duty for non-commercial goods. But the same concept would work anywhere, you just need to search for LCL (less than container load) shippers that service your destination.

Things you need to think about to do this - first, the instrument will be inside a container onboard a ship or sitting in a container yard for a month or so - good idea to buy some silica gel packets and toss in there. You have to consider the strength of the case, or else ask about "top load" only so it does not end up as the bottom pancake in the stack.

And most important is to inquire about customs/duty requirements for your destination. You will need to know country of origination (i.e., where was the guitar built?), but you might find a musical instrument for personal use is duty free - particularly if it is a used one. The duty issues is a factor whether you ship via container in a ship or via DHL, or other air shipping method.

Good luck!

A Korean customer of mine uses these two services.

That's all I know about it. I FedEx the package to the east coast and then they take care of it.
