I remember the first time I saw Paul Franklin he was playing steel for Mel Tillis. He sure got my attention on Burning Memories. |

In 1980 I was still playing bass but trying to play one or two songs on steel each night at gigs. My band was playing at a very popular club one night when we decided to stop in back stage and watch Mel Tillis as he was playing at Will Rogers Auditorium. I'll never forget how I was soo awestruck by Pauls playing. His speed was just unbelievable and I walked away shaking my head.
Well we had to leave to get to our gig just down the road. Later that night we're told Mel and his band had just walked in and asked to play a set. Sad part was all I had was an MSA sidekick but I had left it home. Paul probably would have declined the offer to play it but it would have been a great moment for me if he had.
Luckily a girl I was was seeing had a camera so I at least got this picture of that night minus Paul.
