I have a blown D-120f @ 16 ohms. Can it be reconed to 4 or 8 ohms? _________________ Emmons D-10, ST-10,LD-10 III, NV-112,Fender Deluxe Reverb. Authorized wholesale dealer musicorp.com! |

It is my understanding that the answer to your question is yes. But I would check with soundspeakerrepair.com. They sell a D120f recone kit, but it doesn't state the ohms, so I assume it's the normal 8 ohms. I did a couple K120s with their kits and I am pleased with the results. _________________ It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing. |

Absolutely. GD Waltker has been doing this for years with his Stereo Steel. He reconed all sorts of JBL 15's to D-130 4 ohm specs.i I have a couple of recent emails on this subject from GD. If you will PM me your email address, I will forward them to you.One of my D-130's was originally a 16 ohm PA speaker. Now it is a 4 ohm D-130. |

Yes the impedance can be changed but it's not part of the reconing process per se as it is rewinding of the voice coil that changes the impedance which has little to do with "reconing."
You can rewind a voice coil, and to another impedance. Some prefer using the original paper bobbin that came in the speaker and still reuse the cone and surround if it is in good condition.
Below is a sample of a JBL voice coil but not your speaker's unit.

Yes - but it will still only handle 60 watts RMS.
There's been a mistaken view for years that these were 100 watt speakers because of the way JNBL worded the tech data. The engineer who designed them has insisted for years that 60 watts RMS CLEAN is the maximum they can handle; and about 50% less if any distortion is used (even though a pedal).
This s one reason so many of them have been blown. _________________ No chops, but great tone

All I can say is that I'm surprised one would play a pedal steel through a max'ed out D120. My 35W Pro Reverb with C12K Jensen's kills everyone with volume on 3. _________________ --carl

Also, they allow you to choose the standard kit or the "vintage" kit. The vintage kit has a full paper surround and the voice coil material is very close to the original fabrication. That's probably what you want if you're a fan of the early D 120 F's. The drawback is that the full paper surround is not as robust. You can rectify that by painting a thin bead of the right type of resin around the very edge for enhanced longevity and power handling while still retaining the authentic vintage sound. |

I guess I went with the vintage kit.

Call David Miller @ Speakerworks in Tulsa, He can fix you up and do a great job. He re-cones JBL's for me all the time and is excellent. His # is (918) 664-6299. Good Luck. |

Ken,
Yes, I've had real good luck with their kits.
