Topic: Gave my Emmons a facelift |

I acquired a 1970's push pull Emmons earlier this year. Great guitar, with classic rosewood laminate. Nice.
However...I wanted to give her a brighter look. I still had some red 3M "wrap", which I had used to make my dark green Magnum into a bright red look. So, I gave it a try on the Emmons.
It was easier to measure, cut, and apply the wrap for the Emmons than it had been for the Magnum.
I don't know if I will cover the entire guitar with the wrap or just the front apron. (The rear apron should be simple to cover, also.) The top would be tedious, but certainly is do-able. Here are 'before' and 'after' pics of the Emmons.

I can't say I've ever seen an Emmons that wasn't beautiful.

Looks great! Definite improvement for the eyes. I’m a sucker for red steels. Much to the dismay of others, they sound & play better than that other popular color of steels.

Sure thing, Larry.
Got the wrap from Amazon, maybe 3 years ago. The item is called:
3M 2080 G13 Gloss HOT Rod RED 5ft x 1ft Car Wrap Vinyl Film
They have over 25 colors available. Cost was about $20. I have cut out front apron sections for 3 steel guitars and still have enough left to do another one or two.
The first one I did, I took a large sheet of paper (or maybe a poster sheet?) and made a template of the front apron. Then, I cut the vinyl wrap around that template.
This latest one, I just took VERY careful measurements and marked the backing on the vinyl and then cut it out.
The backing peels off. I just peeled back a couple or so inches of the backing, started the wrap up against the end plate on the front apron, then carefully kept it "inside the lines", that is, right in place over the apron of the guitar, as I would peel another few inches of the backing off. The wrap adhesive is forgiving enough to allow you to pull it back up a bit, then realign as needed.
I'm sure there are many folks on here who have used vinyl wraps more than me, especially on cars, and maybe some will chime-in with their experiences.
$20 to make your guitar any color you want (at least on the aprons) seemed decent enough for me to give it a try.

It looks marvelous!
I've always wanted a Teal Green/black-top Emmons (or a Zum, but that's another story.)
This way, I get my Teal Green Emmons for maybe $20. Acquiring a TG D10 Zum may not come quite so cheaply.
Is there perhaps a link where I could check their range of colours?

John, thanks for the info and link. I want to do my steel seat but the textured surface may cause a problem with adhesives. I would think you have to clean the surface with an alcohol wipe to remove grime then proceed. I gotta try it and find out. The cost is certainly low enough. Nice work on the Emmons.
