Johnie,
Landscaping flags will do in a pinch. They are .060.
I purchased this .055 rod/wire stock From McMaster-Carr many years ago and at the time I made a forming jig for the correct shape.

I go to welding shop and get stainless welding rods. If you get the particular brand, they are already stamped flat on the ends with logo which is barely visible. All you have to do is drill hole for wire hooks. _________________ Henry Matthews

What Henry says above. Welding rod comes with these stamped at ends. One side will have numbers and the other is plain. And yes about the McMaster Carr wire, although the original hooks are make from wire from a spool, so it is coiled. the wire is straightened with a twist which offsets the bends made at each end and gives the hook spring.

Chris, thanks for posting the photo showing the designation “ER308L” on the welding rods.
Based on that clue, I found a 1-pound pack of “ER308L Stainless Steel 308 1/8” TIG Welding Rods” available online at https://www.arc-zone.com/stainless-steel-tig-rod-er-308l for $10.71.

I could never find 36 inch rods online.
I get mine by the pound at a welding supply store, not hardware store. I go through a lot of rods. I also buy the blue hard rubber/plastic cases for holding the fresh rods and the old ones I have replaced plus pedal rods.

Perhaps you're in luck, Chris!
I forgot to mention that the 1-pound pack of “ER308L Stainless Steel 308 1/8” TIG Welding Rods” available online at https://www.arc-zone.com/stainless-steel-tig-rod-er-308l for $10.71 are 36 inches long.
It's difficult to tell for sure from the photo, but the rods look like they have a flat spot near one end--easier than pounding the rods with a hammer, as I've had to do a few times.
