Hey All,
I purchased this steel last year, and realize I am not going to play it enough to justify keeping it.
My hope is that a non-pedal guy checks out this ad, and gets it, and puts it too good use. This seems like a fair price for a Vintage steel that is playable, yet not all original as the following paragraphs illustrate.
$499 plus Fedex Ground shipping from 44240
Here is a description from the previous owner, who did the work to bring this fine steel back to playing condition.
1950s “National†Lap Steel
Serial No. 26005
When I got this in 2000 it had been misused some. The original pick up for the bottom neck had been removed and had been gouged some in the wood. They had also removed the nut on the neck. All of the electronic controls were gone with the cover plate. Both the pickup covers were gone, along with the knobs to hold them on. The covers for the strings on the keyheads were also gone. Other than those items, it was restorable.
I couldn’t duplicate the cover plate for electronics so I just left it plain. I put one new “Bill Lawrence†pickup in, and all new electronics. I fixed the nut with a new one to take care of being cut--made new pickup covers, and replaced the knobs with brass ones. I made new covers for the key heads, but they would be in the way when restringing, and anytime you wanted to tune. (Not important anyway.)
The paint is all original: has a few dings, but for 62 years old, not bad. Fret boards have never been removed, and shouldn’t be. They are in beautiful shape.
When I tried putting on new strings, the plastic tuning key heads will break--broke two, glued them back, and bought all new Kluson tuning keys. Why have something you can’t rely on? The ones that were on first were also Kluson, so the new ones fit perfectly.
May not be original, but you can “play it.†Bought a new case so it has a nice home.
