It's become quite popular to distress guitars and give them antiqued finishes, but I can't say I have seen a steel guitar done like this. Quite the opposite, it seems the in thing is to completely restore steels with a little wear and character on them. I'm not sure I would order one, but do think a steel in flat black would be cool. Just wondering if there are any out there?

Although I admire the skill of the guys who can "relic" an Telecaster, I never did like the notion of doing so. However, I recently acquired a ShoBud Crossover in atrocious condition. Rather than "restore" it to a new-looking finish, I attempted to achieve an "old but well cared for" effect. The rosewood aprons have a deep and intricate lacquer-checking, which is left intact. The birdseye maple was badly discolored and surface-damaged, but most of what you see is original lacquer. Is this the idea you had in mind? Obviously, the fretboards are inauthentic.

Jeff at Show Pro had made a flat black Rat Rod style with 8 ball decal that Looks great.
I'm working on a project and planning to go solid color with painted pin stripes.(#0147 in Jeff's guitar photos)

That steel has character. Some cigarette burns around the key head or apron ala stevie Ray Vaughn would just add to it!
