I have been playing my home made U12 guitar for over 25 years, it is now time to give it a major overhaul and I would really value your opinion on a number of issues.
I don't want to take any big risks in my decisions, I am happy to redesign with materials and sizes that are well tried and tested in most guitars.
1. WOOD TYPE
I currently have what I believe was flame maple. I am hoping to purchase the wood at the weekend, there are currently two choices locally - White Maple and Brown Maple. I have been told the white maple is 'hard' I will be spraying and laquering so I believe birdseye maple is mostly for appearance and is of no benefit in my case. - Is this white maple a good wood choice ?
2. WOOD THICKNESS
Currently the thickness of my maple body is 1 inch top and 1/2 inch front and back. I am thinking the top is too heavy and should be between 1/2 and 3/4 inch thick - which might help sustain - What is your thoughts on best wood thickness ?
3. ALUMINIUM NECK THICKNESS
Currently the thickness of the neck is almost 1 inch. I am thinking of reducing this to between 1/2 and 3/4 inch by milling the complete underside - which might reduce the natural brightness of the neck and improve tone - What do you think is a good neck thickness ?
4. ALUMINIUM NECK POCKETING
Currently I have six large pockets milled out of the neck underside, this leaves material front to back on the neck which has tapped holes and six screws hold the neck to the wood. Would I be better having no front to back fastening and just have the edges of the neck LIGHTLY screwed to the wood - to improve resonance / sustain ?
5. ENDPLATE THICKNESS
What is the ideal aluminium endplate thickness ?
6. TUNING RODS NOISE
My changer fingers are stainless steel and the stainless rod threads make too much noise when running through the holes I currently have extended rods where the non threaded part runs through the hole, it really helps the rod noise but is pretty ugly - any ideas ?
7. ROLLER NUT MATERIAL
My rollers are currently made of Stainless steel and gauged, is there a preferred material nowadays ?
