I first saw this on UTube, when Buddy Emmons was playing the St. Louis Convection (I can't remember the year?)He was going to be playing the Nameless Shuffle. He was introduced on stage and as he sat down in front of his steel he proceeded to start "Licking his Thumb and two playing fingers" as he put his picks on. I thought, well ok this is Buddy Emmons and there must be a reason for this. I have not seen it since however I read something on the Forum that suggested this was a method that helped keep the picks on your fingers.
My picks always feel loose though the 1st set and as my hands warm up the picks tighten. So I "Licked" and I had to pull to get my picks off later. I could not believe how secure they felt on my fingers.
So "Licking is Good" _________________ Mullen SD10, Sho~Bud SD10 LDG, Show-Pro SD10 LDG, Peavey Nashville 112, Boss Katana 100 MK11, Telonic's F100 Multi-Taper Super Pro V/P, Wayne Brown “Custom Designed Amp”

Been licking my fingers for decades. It really does work for keeping picks on. I tried all the gooey crap that people recommended, and always went back to licking my fingers. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Steel players are clean musicians, We wash our hand on break. When we get on stage we have to lick our fingers to seat our picks.
I chew tobacco and that gives my picks their own glue. |

When I got my latest set of picks (Nationals) I had to lick them (my fingers, that is ) but as time has passed I don't need to. I think maybe the combination of spit and sweat has etched the metal so that it's less slippery. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

Just eat a piece of KFC chicken. Picks stay on for life. At least that's my findings. I learned the licking finger method from Herby Wallace. Works for me too. The chicken is optional. |

I was intrigued by the title of this topic, and was going to make several pertinent comments.. However when I got into the discussion it was about playing the steel guitar, and realized it was a different site I was thinking about. _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

I too am a "licker". I often wonder what people out in the audience must think. It must look pretty strange! |

I actually could not use Dunlap finger picks ( only nationals) till I learned about saliva.
I was the one that posted that Emmons video. It made me feel better when I saw E do it! |

I recently started doing this licking ritual after reading about it on the Forum... it works! I also lick my left hand palm, helps hold the bar better, usually a powder-coated Hillman bar. _________________ E9 INSTRUCTION
