Last August I built a 3/4 aluminum, 1/4 wood lap steel. It sounded good, but one night I placed it on my night stand and it spun like a top. After checking things out, I found out the strings flexed the body due to the thin wood I used on the top. I tore it apart and made a 1/8" aluminum top and a new head. No more bowing......it got a little heavier but that's OK. Here are the before and after pics.
