Does anyone know what effect(s) J D Maness was using on the Desert Rose Austin City Limits YouTube video? Perhaps a Leslie-type pedal? Sounds great with that Emmons. Show recorded early 80's I think.

The show I believe is from 1988, one can watch the whole thing on YouTube. I am having a difficult time sharing the link because I’m on my phone but it’s easy enough to find on the site.
Not sure about the effects myself but maybe Jay Dee will see this thread an enlighten us.

| It was a Yamaha 1005 chorus unit. He also used a Yamaha SPX-90, to smooth out the chorus, he said. |

Indeed it was,, best country band of all time, bare NONE.. Honorable mention to Buck and the Buckaroos, Emmy's Hot Band, and Poco, but c'mon Jorgenson and Maness trading licks, and Hillman and Pederson harmonizing???.. world class... bob

Thanks for the input guys. I agree, that band was without equal, absolutely killer. The only possible competition is the Hot Band.

Each time I hear JayDee I wonder if he's not my favourite player of all time! The spirit of what he's doing here is what drew me to steel guitar all those years ago.
Best ever band? A toss-up between this one and the mid-'70s' Hot Band. Hard to call, really.
I agree with Chris - there's some sort of tape distortion here. Whatever it is, it's not essential to what JayDee's playing - that's all in his amazing right hand!

| There is definitely a stereo chorus or similar modulation effect on the steel on a lot of the recordings. Man this band is ridiculous, now I want to give up not only the steel but the guitar as well. [insert crying emoji] |

Yes, a great band in all ways. Dug them then and still do. The chorus sounds do kind of place them in their era, but they are subtle and tasteful.
I remember only too well trying to get "that sound" out of a Boss chorus pedal, only to find it simply ain't in there.
