Hey there,

Doug Earnest contacted me yesterday saying that I'm next on the list for a new Zumsteel Encore. He sent over a couple pictures of a new hammered silver finish on a metal body cover. He told me there would be a black version ready in a couple weeks as well. I haven't seen anything like this before and wanted to check if any of you on here have seen, used, or owned a steel with this kind of finish. I asked Doug if it affects the sound and he thinks that bass notes sound a bit more defined. I am hopping on the phone with him a little later today to talk details but wanted to see if anyone has any experience or thoughts on this kind of finish. Whether I go the metal or more traditional route I'm sure looking forward to my new Encore! Thanks in advance!

Alex

Hi Alex,
My understanding is that all Encores have a metal covering, regardless of colour.
I have a black Encore 4 + 5, which has the metal shroud.
It's a great sounding and playing guitar (I also have an all pull Emmons D10 and an SD10 Derby for comparison).
Doug is a great guy who builds an excellent guitar.
He will always go the extra mile in customer service.
Lee

Alex, I think it looks pretty cool, and it'll match your Hilton volume pedal! I say go for it, look forward to seeing what you get in a lesson soon!!

Alex,
I worked for Doug for a couple of years. I have to say that those bodies look very cool and from what I heard, added more sustain. The wood vibrates better and like Doug says, it added something to the bass. Bruce Zumsteg could even tell a difference and was well pleased with the end result. The guitar isn't any heavier and the last time I was at Doug's shop, he's having some really cool looking guitars.

If you do a solid color, you won't really be able to tell a difference in it opposed to a mica finish. You might be able to tell up close, but at a small distance, you shouldn't.

I think that's the same type of finish that GFI used on the endplates of their Expo guitars. It's kind of a spatter-spray.

He calls it a laser cut, bent, powder coated sheet of aluminum. I bought mine off his table at Dallas last year. I really like it. Zero problems, still looks like it did when I got it. I liked the finish cause it was good looking and different. The more of you guys that get one, the less different I’m going to be, dang. Great little grab and go guitar and plenty good to play your gigs with.

I just received an Encore from Doug with the metal finish pictured in your post. Besides looking slick as all get out it plays great! I love this guitar it is both light and sturdy and has incredible tone and sustain. I will add that Doug is a great guy and an excellent Craftsman.
